A girl of about ten reclines on a lawn in front of a brick house, wearing a striped tank swimsuit and shorts, positioned between two painted wooden window boxes overflowing with geraniums and climbing ivy. Behind her, the house shows the modest modernist touches of early 1950s domestic architecture: blue-painted frames, narrow horizontal windows, and the kind of orderly garden layout that suggested a homeowner had consulted a magazine. She is posing for the camera in a way that assumes someone will want a record of her there, in that outfit, in that yard, on what was plainly a good day for color film. The composition and her staged ease suggest this was the sort of casual suburban documentation that families were beginning to collect—evidence that they owned a lawn, maintained flowers, and possessed a child old enough to sit still for photography. By the 1960s, such images would seem quaint; by then, the postwar suburban dream would be harder to distinguish from its own parody.
