In the 1950s, when color film was expensive and special, couples documented their domestic leisure this way—not candid, not accidental, but staged on the lawn to show they had both a shrub worth blooming and the time to stand beside it. The formality of their posture and the deliberate framing suggest this was taken by someone who knew how to use a camera, possibly a friend with a recent slide camera, which meant this moment was considered worth preserving in color film at a cost that would not be recovered by looking at it once.
