A woman in a pink dress and a boy in blue jeans stand posed on a park lawn while other families gather in the background around picnic tables and a pram. This was the idea of a summer outing: a public park, a portable meal, children dressed as carefully as adults because clothing was not yet disposable and a picnic was an occasion. The woman and boy stand apart from the activity, facing the camera with the stiffness of people who have been told a photograph is being taken and have arranged themselves accordingly. Behind them, other families move naturally through their own afternoon, unaware they are being documented, which means the photographer wanted two subjects specifically posed while everyone else remained incidental. The grass is mown and the trees are full; no one is concerned about sun exposure or hydration; the park is simply where you went on a day when the weather permitted it.
