Behind them dozens of families have spread across a city park on a summer afternoon, unpacking lunch from baskets, lying on the grass in the full sun without concern. The man's posture is neither relaxed nor entirely confident; he is doing what was expected of him on such a day, standing where a man was supposed to stand at a family outing, shirtless in the heat and ready to demonstrate capability or supervise play. The girl holds a beach ball in the bright primary colors of new plastic, the kind of toy that cost almost nothing and required no batteries or assembly—just air and desire. They are waiting for permission to enjoy themselves in the way the 1950s had decided was correct: outdoors, visible, moderately dressed, in public view, where the boundary between private family and public park had not yet become a fence or a rule.
