A boy of about ten stands alone on a lawn in rolled-up jeans and a plaid shirt, barefoot, looking at the camera with the unselfconscious directness of a child who has been told to stand still for a picture. Behind him, scattered across the grass under tall trees, are the elements of a mid-century family outing: folding camp chairs, a cloth-covered hamper, a woman in a pink dress, another child, a bicycle wheel visible at the frame edge. Nobody is eating or playing; they are simply occupying a public park on what appears to be a weekend, dressed in the casual-but-neat clothes that meant you were not at home but were still presenting yourself. The boy's bare feet and the casual arrangement of adults suggest this was an ordinary Saturday afternoon, the kind of thing families did when parks were free territory and a camera was something you brought along to mark the occasion as worth remembering, even though nothing remarkable was happening.
