A man in a straw hat and two-piece suit stands at a blue picnic table while two boys in casual shirts sit across from him, one in a plaid shirt and one shirtless, in a tree-lined public park. Another man sits alone at the far left on a canvas folding chair, facing away. The standing man has positioned himself at the head of the table in the manner of someone who has brought the children here and is now in charge of the meal, a responsibility he appears to be taking seriously enough to keep his jacket on in the summer heat. The casual segregation of the two adults—one presiding, one observing from a distance—and the boys' half-dressed state suggest this is the kind of outing where a man took his children or nephews to a park on a weekday afternoon, fed them from containers on the table, and considered the event both a duty and a documented occasion. The formal wear at a picnic was ordinary then, a sign that going out with children in daylight was a thing you dressed for, not relaxed into.
