The brooms are new, the costumes are old, and the street was almost certainly clean already. This is the kind of civic theater the Netherlands perfected for its tourist trade in the 1960s: women in the black bodices, lace caps, and striped skirts of regional dress, sweeping cobblestones in unison for an audience that arrived by chartered coach and left with a roll of Kodachrome.
Behind them a woman in a pale wool coat and cat-eye glasses watches with the polite detachment of someone who knows this is a performance, not a chore, and a boxy sedan idles at the curb waiting for the show to clear the road. The wooden clogs underfoot are functional rather than decorative, proof that some of this costume survived because it worked, long after the rest of it survived because visitors expected it.
Nobody here looks like they believe the street needs sweeping. They look like people who have done this exact routine before, know exactly when the tour bus doors open, and have long since stopped being surprised that strangers pay good money to watch them hold a broom correctly.
The historian's note
Regional folk costume in the Netherlands, including the striped skirts, black bodices, and lace caps seen here, survived into the twentieth century primarily in fishing villages such as Volendam and Marken, where it became closely tied to the tourist economy after World War II. By the 1960s these villages staged organized demonstrations of traditional dress and daily tasks for visiting groups, a practice that both preserved and commercialized a way of dressing that had otherwise largely disappeared from everyday Dutch life.
The wooden clogs worn here were still in practical use in rural and coastal communities during this period, valued for their waterproof soles on wet cobblestone and harbor-side streets. The passenger car and the coats worn by onlookers place the scene firmly in the postwar automobile era, when bus tourism to these villages was already a well-established industry.
