Every May the sidewalks of downtown Holland filled with teenagers who had spent the winter learning a dance their great-grandparents never actually performed back in the Netherlands, all in service of a festival built to remind Michigan that its founders had been Dutch. The wooden shoes clacking on asphalt were real enough, and so was the discipline of the line, but the whole production owed less to old-country tradition than to a chamber of commerce that understood tourism needed a costume.

A man crouches at the curb with a camera, doing the crouching that every father of that decade considered mandatory for capturing a parade, while behind him a crowd several rows deep leans in under the awning of the Hotel Warm Friend, a name so aggressively wholesome it could only have been chosen in an era still confident that hotels ought to sound like relatives. The dancers move in a long chain, aprons and bonnets synchronized down to the last pleat, each girl's costume a small act of civic homework.

Nobody in the photograph looks bored, which is itself a period detail; boredom at civic pageantry was not yet fashionable. The dance will end, the shoes will go back in a closet until next spring, and the town will return to being an ordinary American Main Street with unusually good street cleaning.
