A precision drill corps in full dark dress uniforms — brass-buckled belts, white gloves, peaked white caps — marches down the center of a wide Main Street while the town turns out on both sidewalks in summer clothes, the kind of Saturday crowd that in the 1950s could still be assembled by a parade alone, without a concert headliner or a food truck. The lead officers carry themselves with the particular gravity of men who have practiced this walk in a parking lot for months, which is exactly what they have done. Behind them a color guard advances with regimental flags, performing the civic ritual that American towns maintained with great earnestness on the theory that a community that could stage a parade was a community that still held together. A dairy company billboard advertising ice cream, butter, and milk looms over the brick storefronts — the Giuffre sign beside it suggests an Italian-immigrant business in what looks like a Midwestern commercial strip — and the whole street has the unhurried confidence of an era that did not yet know it was about to be bypassed by a highway. The crowd watches with the attentive respect of people for whom a man in a uniform marching in a straight line still counted as entertainment.
