A large group of schoolchildren in uniform assemblies stands in the brick plaza of a prosperous Dutch town, the kind of civic gathering that postwar municipalities organized with methodical pride—evidence that normalcy and order had been restored after a decade of disruption. The Janssen-Huis delivery truck parked at the square's edge suggests everyday commerce running smoothly again, while the brick rowhouses and church tower behind frame a scene of deliberate stability. This was the era when European towns staged such parades and assemblies as proof that childhood could be orderly, that children could be marched in formation through public space with confidence in the future, and that a photographer might capture it for the town's records. The children stand in dense rows facing the camera with the patient compliance of those who have been told this is important and patriotic. What no one in 1950 could have known is that within a generation, such regimented public gatherings of children would begin to feel uncomfortable rather than reassuring.
