毎年5月、ホランド市街地の歩道はティーンエイジャーたちで満ちていた。彼らはこの冬、オランダの曾祖父母たちが実際には決して踊らなかったダンスを習得していた。それはすべて、ミシガン州の創始者がオランダ人だったことを思い出させるために建設されたフェスティバルのためのものだった。木靴がアスファルトをカタカタと鳴らす音は十分にリアルであり、行列の規律もそうだったが、この全体的な企画は旧国の伝統よりも、観光にはコスチュームが必要であることを理解していた商工会議所の方がより多くを負っていた。

写真の誰もが退屈そうに見えない。それ自体が時代の細部である。市民的儀式に対する退屈はまだ流行していなかった。ダンスは終わり、靴は来春まで物置に戻され、町は通常のアメリカのメインストリートに戻る。ただし街路清掃は異常に良い。
