At an outdoor market somewhere in postwar Europe, a woman in a blue apron tends two large aluminum pots on a heavy iron brazier with the focused economy of someone who has been doing this since before the crowd arrived. The 1950s were the decade when Europe rediscovered the pleasure of public commerce, street fairs and market days blooming back across town squares and pavements that had seen considerably worse uses in the previous decade. Behind her, a dark sedan — the kind of rounded, upright automobile that manufacturers sold as modest luxury before the tailfin arrived — is parked among stalls selling what appear to be toys and paper goods in bright colors, the sort of cheerful, inexpensive merchandise that a recovering economy could finally afford to make frivolous. A man in a suit watches from just behind her left shoulder with the expression of someone who came for the food and is pretending he came for the market. She is not watching him back, because the pot is more important than he is, which is the correct professional assessment.
