Someone has moved the party into the kitchen, which is what always happens at a certain kind of 1950s gathering no matter how nice the living room is. The men have kept their neckties on for an event that clearly no longer requires them, because a necktie in this decade was less an accessory than a small unremovable statement of seriousness about being alive.

The woman in the dark hat holds her teacup like a delicate transaction, balancing china while everyone around her jockeys for the same counter space, and the whole cluster has the choreography of people who have done this exact shuffle at a dozen other houses. Nobody is looking at the camera because nobody thought this moment was the moment; it was just the interval between the toast and the food, the part historians only get to see because someone happened to be holding a camera at the wrong right time.

The orange cabinet behind them was, at the time, considered a bold and modern choice, the kind of color a homeowner picked specifically so guests would notice the kitchen had been redone. It has since become the single most dateable object in the room.
