A Sunday-night supper is underway in a church fellowship hall, the kind of event that in the 1950s occupied the institutional middle ground between a potluck and a sacrament. The pennant on the back wall, readable as a Sunday school class banner, tells you everything about the organizing logic: someone's class has claimed this room, arranged folding chairs at plywood-on-sawhorses tables covered with white paper, and produced a meal that will be remembered less for what was served than for who sat next to whom. The adults eat with the focused economy of people who have fed children first and are now eating cold. A woman in glasses at the center table has turned to say something to the person beside her, because no church dinner has ever been eaten in silence, the fellowship being the point rather than the food. The dark amber glasses of what is almost certainly iced tea confirm the geography as American and the season as probably warm. A small girl in a red dress stands apart at the edge of the left table, already bored in the way children at adult civic events have been bored since civic events were invented, which is to say always.
