A dozen or so adults are gathered around a long dinner table in the 1950s, dressed as though a sit-down meal with acquaintances required the same sartorial preparation as a job interview — which, in that decade, it more or less did. The men wear suits and ties; the women have set their hair with the kind of deliberate architecture that did not happen by accident, and everyone is eating with the focused sociability of people who understood that a dinner party was a performance as much as a meal. A framed certificate or plaque on the wall behind the table suggests this may be a church hall, a lodge room, or some other civic space that doubled as a banquet venue, the sort of institution that held America's communal life together before anyone thought to replace it with something more convenient. The candle in the centre of the table was the 1950s dinner-party signal that this was a special occasion, deployed whether the occasion warranted it or not. Everyone is engaged in conversation or their plate, and nobody is looking at the camera, which means either the photographer was very discreet or nobody yet understood that the camera was there to catch them.
