A family has gathered around a table set with the good china for what is plainly a birthday — the white-frosted layer cake sits dead center, untouched, while everyone around it is already eating the meal that must come first, because in the 1950s the cake was a destination you earned through proper sequence. A boy of about ten has turned entirely away from his plate to look at the camera with the focused attention of someone who has been waiting longer than everyone else. The women at the table are dressed as if this is a occasion that required dressing for, and one is mid-forkful with the unselfconscious confidence of a person who does not yet know she is being photographed. The whole tableau captures the domestic ritual at full strength: the lace curtains, the cold cuts beside the birthday cake, the hierarchy of patience that put the adults in charge of when dessert happened.
