A group of children gathered around a backyard table for a Halloween party in the 1950s, every one of them wearing a miniature cardboard pumpkin hat — the kind of die-cut party favor that came in a box of eight from the five-and-dime and that a mother distributed with the confidence of someone deploying a proven technology. The table is covered in orange-and-black Halloween paper printed with cats and jack-o'-lanterns, surrounded by wax paper cups in the same seasonal palette, because in this decade the idea that children needed a themed surface under their cupcakes was already completely settled science. One girl in the center stands with her mouth slightly open, possibly mid-sentence, possibly mid-cookie, the distinction being largely irrelevant at this age. At least one child has come as Snow White, which in the years just after the Disney re-release was the unambiguous costume of a girl with serious ambitions. The whole scene has the air of an event that was planned around the children and attended entirely on the schedule of the adults who organized it.
