On Christmas morning in the 1950s, two children in their pajamas are working through the wreckage of gift wrap on the living room carpet with the focused intensity of a professional salvage operation. The older girl, seated cross-legged in her housecoat, is already deep into a box containing what appears to be a doll — the kind of elaborately dressed figure that toy manufacturers of the era packaged as though it were accompanying royalty to a state dinner. Her younger brother has paused mid-unwrap to look at the camera with the expression of someone who has just been interrupted doing something extremely important. In the background, a large cardboard shipping carton stamped FRAGILE sits against the wall, suggesting that at least one gift arrived by freight — which in the 1950s meant something was either very delicate, very large, or purchased from a catalogue with the optimism that it would survive three weeks in a rail car. The tartan-lidded cookie tin and the scatter of toys across the carpet record exactly what consumer abundance looked like in a middle-class American household the morning after a holiday that the postwar economy had finally made genuinely festive.
