Christmas morning, 1950s: a toddler sits cross-legged on the living room carpet surrounded by the wreckage of gift wrap, holding a red toy telephone receiver to his mouth with the focused intensity of someone who has been waiting his whole life to make this call. The toy itself — almost certainly a Fisher-Price pull-along with a rotary dial and a cheerful face — was one of the decade's defining objects of childhood, marketed on the theory that practicing telephone etiquette at age two would produce socially prepared adults. The child appears to have skipped the etiquette portion and gone straight to eating the receiver.
Around him sits the full mid-century toddler inventory: a plaid hat box, a stuffed animal, a music box with nursery-rhyme panels, a small ceramic animal figurine in the style that grandmothers considered whimsical. Every item is primary-colored and built to survive. The adults in the room are represented by a single pair of open-toed heels visible at the edge of the frame, which is the exact amount of adult supervision Christmas morning requires.
Somewhere in this house a camera was loaded, a flashbulb screwed in, and a parent decided that this — the telephone moment — was the one worth keeping. They were right, which is why fifty years later the receiver is still to his lips and he is still, apparently, on hold.
