On Christmas morning in the 1950s, a toddler stands in the wreckage of an American gift-giving event that someone had been planning since at least October, wearing the white footed pajamas that were, in that decade, the only socially acceptable garment for a child to receive presents in. Behind him the carpet is covered with the full taxonomy of mid-century children's commerce: a Junior Combination Games set promising chess, checkers, and other activities a two-year-old would not touch for several years, a Make Your Own Charm Jewelry kit pitched at an older sibling, a fashion doll in pink packaging, and a ceramic snowman figurine that would spend the next thirty years migrating between attics. The empty white shoebox beside him suggests he has already located and discarded the tissue paper, which was, in his estimation, the point. Every adult in the room believed that giving a child this many things at once was an act of love, and every child in every generation has confirmed, by ignoring most of them before noon, that they were right about the love and wrong about the quantity.
