A small boy in rolled-cuff jeans and white high-tops stands in a 1950s kitchen, looking at the camera with the expression of someone who has been doing something he shouldn't and knows the camera has caught him mid-guilt. Behind him, a white poodle — the decade's default aspirational household pet, proof that the family had taste — turns its back on the whole situation with its tail raised, having apparently decided the boy's company was no longer worth its time. The red marbled linoleum underfoot dates this kitchen as precisely as a tree ring, that particular pattern having been sold by the millions to postwar families who understood a good kitchen floor as one that could be mopped. A woman's kitten-heeled shoe edges the frame beside a dark appliance, the universal posture of a parent who stepped back just enough to let someone else take the picture. The poodle, alone among those present, had the correct instinct about where this was going.
