Sometime in the 1950s, a parent decided that the correct response to a toddler's first unassisted steps was to fetch the camera immediately, which meant the child had to keep performing the miracle while the flashbulb charged. The result is a small figure in a pale sleeper with a teddy-bear motif, arms out for balance, caught mid-wobble on a carpet that cost more than the furniture deserved to ask — the French Provincial writing desk in the corner being the decade's signal that a family had arrived somewhere worth noting. The child has the expression of someone who has discovered that walking is technically possible but the physics remain negotiable. Every detail of the room — the skirted armchair, the carefully appointed desk, the wall-to-wall carpet in a subdued postwar green — broadcasts a young household assembling itself into the respectable American interior it had seen in magazine spreads. The camera was pointed at the child, but what it caught was the decade.
