Sometime in the 1950s, an American family decided that the correct way to photograph a toddler was to dress her as though she were attending a small diplomatic reception — layered pink ruffles, white hair bow, white leather Mary Janes — and then ask her to stand still in the living room between the green sofa and the floral armchair while someone pointed a camera at her. The child has clearly been told this is a special occasion, and her expression suggests she finds that claim unpersuasive. Behind her, a folded newspaper sits in the chair beside an adult's elbow, evidence that the rest of the household was going about its Sunday in a normal way until someone decided a portrait was needed. The room itself is a period document: the floral chintz armchair, the teal upholstered sofa, the ceramic lamp in harvest gold, all assembled with the cheerful confidence of a decade that had recently discovered it could afford nice things. The dress, with its three tiers of eyelet ruffles, would have required ironing, and the shoes would have been white that morning, and the bow is already slightly crooked — which is about as far as a two-year-old will cooperate with anyone's vision of a perfect occasion.
