A boy of about seven sits on a green patterned sofa in a wood-paneled living room, wearing a cream-colored shirt with the collar up and his finger raised to his mouth in a pose his parents or the photographer has asked him to hold. The wallpaper behind him is institutional beige, the kind that appeared in American homes during the 1950s when interior decoration was a matter of choosing from approved patterns rather than expressing preference. He has been dressed for the portrait—his hair is carefully arranged, his shirt buttoned, his posture arranged—because having a photograph taken of a child was still an event serious enough to warrant preparation, still rare enough that you dressed up for it. His expression is neither quite smiling nor quite serious, the face of a child performing compliance while the camera decides what he will look like to people he may never meet. The sofa behind him, with its heavy fabric and formal nap, belongs to a room that was meant to be sat in carefully, not lived in, a distinction that would fade by the 1960s when American furniture began to assume people had actual bodies.
