Sometime in the 1950s, a small boy in a red button-up shirt was sat on a stool in front of a pale wall and asked to hold still, which he has done in the approximate way that children hold still — hands flat on his corduroys, mouth slightly open, looking at the camera with the expression of someone who has been told this will only take a second and is not yet sure he believes it. The corduroy pants with their reinforced knees were standard-issue boyhood equipment in this decade, the garment equivalent of a warranty claim against the inevitable.

The whole setup — the stool, the plain wall, the careful positioning — has the logic of a portrait attempt by a parent who had recently acquired a camera and decided that a neutral background would produce a professional result. The gap between that ambition and a slightly blurry, shadow-heavy snapshot of a fidgeting four-year-old is exactly the gap the 1950s home-photography boom was built on. He looks like he has somewhere better to be, and he is probably right.
