The number candles on the cake read two and three, which means someone has turned either two or three years old, and the whole family has gathered in front of the floral drapes to mark the occasion with the same gravity adults brought to mortgage signings. The birthday child in the red shirt sits at the center with the slightly stunned look of a toddler who has been told this is a very special day and is taking that claim under advisement.
In the 1950s, a children's birthday party was one of the few domestic rituals that required dressing up even the guests, and the girls here have obliged — one in white, one in a green-and-white dress with the kind of Peter Pan collar that said 'Sunday best' as clearly as any label. The older boy behind has his arm around the birthday child with the proprietary affection of a sibling who has decided to be helpful whether or not help was requested.
The cake is white with pink trim, store-bought or carefully iced to look it, because in this era a homemade cake that didn't look professional was not yet considered charming — it was just a less good cake. The girl on the right is already looking down at it with the focus of someone who has identified her preferred slice and is simply waiting for the adult with the knife.
