Christmas morning in a 1950s American living room, and someone has decided that the wall behind the tree should be covered edge-to-edge in greeting cards — the complete annual harvest, pinned up as both decoration and proof of social standing. The more cards you displayed, the better your Christmas was going, which is the kind of logic that made perfect sense until the moment it didn't.

The woman standing in an orange quilted housecoat is holding up a just-unwrapped gift with the particular expression of someone who is genuinely pleased and also aware she is performing being genuinely pleased. This was the correct behavior. The man on the floor in the matching orange shirt has either coordinated his outfit with hers or simply lives in a decade where that shade of orange was treated as neutral.

Around them, children and relatives occupy every available inch of floor in the practiced chaos of a household that has been doing this exact thing, in this exact formation, for years. The silver tinsel icicles on the tree have been applied with the density that the 1950s considered tasteful, which future generations would reconsider.
