On the image

A mother and her two daughters are playing bingo at the living-room coffee table, each pressing small markers onto their cards with the focused economy of people who have done this before. Home bingo was a legitimate Saturday-evening entertainment in the 1950s, sold in boxed sets with glass or plastic chips and a caller's drum, because the decade believed firmly that a well-organized family activity was its own reward. The mother perches at the edge of the cushion with the posture of someone running the game and playing it simultaneously, which is the administrative role that falls to mothers in every era. The girls are dressed as though company was expected — or as though getting dressed up was simply what you did before sitting on the sofa — because in the 1950s the distinction between home life and its presentation had not yet been fully abandoned. Nobody at this table suspects that within twenty years the same game will be considered something you play in a church hall at seventy, and that the evening's wholesome logic will need no further explanation than the photograph itself.
