二羽の白い白鳥が、互いを無視することで暗黙の了解に達した生き物特有の、計算されたような間隔を保って浅い池を占めている。左側の一羽は完璧な同心円状に広がる波紋を描いており、誰も頼んでいない物理現象の実演のようである。右側の一羽は横向きに浮かび、油断なく、そしてやや不機嫌そうにしている。水鳥が見られていると感じたときによく見せるあの態度だ。この池は、1950年代に公園や田舎の邸宅に見られたような、小さく管理された水域の一種である——池と呼ぶに十分な深さがありながら、子供たちが立ち入ることは、誰もはっきり説明できない理由でともかく禁じられている程度の浅さである。草の生えた岸辺は、この光景が手入れの行き届いた敷地の端から撮影されたことを示唆しており、白鳥が繁栄と秩序を意味するような場所であったことをうかがわせる。両方の鳥とも首を古典的な白鳥の姿勢に曲げており、この撮影当時すでに装飾的なものになりつつあった形——誰かが思い描いた優雅さの生きた具現化である。

The historian's note

家畜化されたコブハクチョウは、20世紀半ばまでにヨーロッパと北米各地の観賞用池や水路によく見られる存在となっていた。彼らは数世紀前に大陸ヨーロッパからイングランドへ輸入され、礼儀作法と上品な景観管理の象徴として飼育されてきた。1950年代までには、公共の公園、邸宅、私的なコレクションに日常的に姿を見せ、実用的な目的というよりもその見た目のために重宝されていた。これらの鳥は定期的な餌やりと世話を必要とし、その存在は、その場所が手入れされ、意図を持って整えられていることを示していた——白鳥が何を意味するかを理解する者なら誰でも読み取れる地位の証であった。この光景における白鳥の登場は、観賞用家禽の広範な普及と、秩序立った装飾的な自然を好んだ20世紀半ばの嗜好の両方を反映している。
