ドライブ旅行中の誰かが、この川の曲がり角は車を停める価値があると判断したが、結局きちんと車から降りて写真を撮ることはできなかった。クロームメッキの橋の欄干が画面下三分の一を横切っているが、これは動かしようがなく、撮影者はそれに気づいていない。撮影者はレンズが実際に何を写しているかではなく、その向こうの水面を見ていたのだ。

これこそ1950年代のアマチュア旅行写真における未解決の大問題である。観光客が見ていたのは風景であって写真ではなく、カメラはその違いをまったく無頓着に記録した。川は干し草の草地と木立の境界の間を、平坦でガラスのように滑らかに流れ去っていく。これはヨーロッパのドライブ旅行が大量に生み出した、これといって特徴のない絵になる「どこでもない場所」であり、帰国後に地図上で特定できる者など誰もいなかった。

この写真は、まさに撮られた通りのものとして今も残っている。誰も記録しなかった休憩の記念品であり、旅が行われたことの証拠ではあるが、どこであったかの証拠にはならない。
