The clouds sitting mid-slope are doing the mountain's dirty work, hiding just enough of the summit that nobody in this line of hikers has to confront how far they still have to go. Four figures with daypacks and the confident stride of people who read a guidebook once are crossing the volcanic saddle between peaks, on ground that looks like a moonscape wearing a bad toupee of tussock grass.
By the 1960s climbing Kilimanjaro had become a manageable ambition for the reasonably fit tourist, a mountain you could summit without ropes if you had good boots and low expectations of comfort. The porters who made this possible are, per the custom of the era, not in the photograph. What the camera caught instead is the tidy myth every trekking party carries with it: that the hard part is behind them, when at this altitude the hard part has barely introduced itself.
The historian's note
Mount Kilimanjaro, in what was then Tanganyika and by the mid-1960s the newly independent Tanzania, had been a fixture of European mountaineering interest since Hans Meyer's first recorded ascent of Kibo in 1889. By the 1960s guided treks along established routes, including the high saddle plateau between the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks shown here, were a recognised activity for foreign visitors, supported by local Chagga guides and porters operating outside any formal park structure, since Kilimanjaro National Park itself was not gazetted until 1973.
The terrain visible in this scene, tussock grass and scattered volcanic rock at high altitude with cloud sitting below the summit line, is characteristic of the alpine desert zone above the mountain's forest belt. This zone was and remains a standard staging ground on the ascent, sitting well above 4,000 metres, where vegetation thins dramatically before the final scree and ice fields near the crater rim.
