On the image

Four people cross a slope of dark volcanic cinder as though it were a gravel footpath in a municipal park, which tells you something about how casually mid-century travellers treated an active volcano. Cardigans, loafers, and a woman carrying what looks like a child or a rolled coat were considered adequate preparation for walking on ground that used to be lava.

The scrub clinging to the hillside behind them is the only concession to the fact that this ground eventually stops being hostile and starts supporting life again, given enough centuries. Nobody here seems to be thinking about that timescale. They are thinking about lunch, and about getting a good look into whatever crater lies over the next rise, because in the 1960s a volcano was simply a scenic overlook that occasionally acted up.

There is no guide rope, no warning sign, no ranger station in sight, only the confidence of people who assumed the mountain had already done its worst for the day.

The historian's note

By the 1960s, guided ascents of active or dormant volcanoes in the Mediterranean and Macaronesian regions had become an established feature of package tourism, with operators leading small groups on foot across ash and cinder slopes to crater rims or fumarole fields. Such excursions required no specialised equipment or permits, reflecting both the lower regulatory oversight of the period and a general public confidence in volcanic dormancy that later eruptions would complicate.

The dark, loosely compacted ground and sparse colonising scrub visible here are characteristic of a slope built from relatively recent volcanic deposits, where vegetation establishes itself slowly along drainage lines and more stable pockets of soil. Photographs of this kind, taken by tourists rather than scientists, now serve as incidental records of slope vegetation and land use at a specific point in a volcano's recovery cycle.
