This is the work of field geology: men moving through terrain not to discover something unknown but to read what was already written in stone, taking notes on strata that were ancient when the Civil War started. The white outcroppings and exposed layers suggest the kind of site where a university department or government survey might send researchers to map mineral deposits, collect samples, or train students in the hard skill of reading geology in the field rather than from a textbook. The historian's note

Badlands formations of this type—layered sediments with exposed purple clay and chalk—occur across the Great Plains and intermountain West, particularly in regions of the Dakotas, Wyoming, and similar terrain. The styling and colour rendering suggest a mid-twentieth-century expedition, consistent with the period when state geological surveys and university field programmes regularly conducted stratigraphic studies and educational field schools in badlands terrain. Such work was foundational to understanding regional geology, palaeontology, and mineral distribution; the visible layering in the outcrop would have been valuable for dating deposits and identifying the depositional environments of past geological periods. The fieldwork method shown—direct observation and physical sampling of exposed strata—remained the standard approach in geology throughout the twentieth century.
