The balcony railings frame a brick building and street scene behind her, the kind of modest urban dwelling where a family might display their hobbies to the daylight and passersby below. She has positioned the dollhouse carefully, angling it toward the camera with the ease of someone who has done this before—perhaps for a photograph, or perhaps simply because the balcony was the only place with enough light and wall space to show it off. The dollhouse itself is clearly handmade or at least hand-finished, a craft project that occupied real hours, the kind of thing a person would be proud enough to bring outside, to make visible, to document. In the 1950s, when a woman's domestic skills were the approved outlet for her time and ambition, a well-made miniature house was evidence of patience and taste, displayed here as casually and as seriously as any man might display a completed engine block.
