Behind her, beach cottages with shingled roofs slope away toward a harbor; the scene is bright with the particular colorlessness of 1950s Kodachrome, all blues pushed toward purple and greens toward yellow. The dollhouse sits on a table at her elbow, complete with miniature windows and a front door the size of her hand, a detailed world she has either made or inherited and decided to photograph, perhaps to prove it existed, perhaps to show visitors what she had built. The balcony railing is painted the same blue as the house trim. No one has yet decided that a hobby like this needs to be documented in motion or color-corrected, or that she should smile; it is enough to sit beside the thing you have made and let the camera record that you were here and it was real.
