A girl of about eight sits in a green-framed lawn chair in what is plainly a well-kept suburban backyard, wearing a blue-and-white gingham dress with a dark collar and a small red pin at the chest — the kind of outfit that in the 1950s said Sunday afternoon or special occasion, the two being nearly indistinguishable. The dress reaches almost to her ankles, a length that would have struck her mother as correct and would strike anyone who lived through the subsequent decades as a minor puzzle about where all that fabric went. She is smiling the slightly sideways smile of a child who has decided to cooperate with the camera but on her own terms. Someone with a new colour camera and a tidy lawn had concluded that this combination of child, chair, and grass constituted a picture worth preserving, and they were right, though probably not for the reason they thought.
