On the image

Somewhere along the eastern shore of Puget Sound in the 1950s, a two-lane road hugs a wooded bluff above a quiet waterfront community, the kind of place where postwar families had concluded that a view of the water was a reasonable trade for a forty-minute commute. The houses nearest the shore sit on generous lots with private docks, the whole arrangement communicating that the residents had arrived at prosperity without making too much noise about it.

The utility poles marching down the roadside mark the decade as precisely as anything else in the scene — the infrastructure of modern convenience still new enough to be conspicuous, still routed overhead because burying it would have seemed extravagant. Cars parked along the shoulder are few enough that the road reads as peaceful rather than remote, a distinction the neighborhood would have considered important.

The community stretches north along the water with the unhurried confidence of a place that had no reason to expect the sprawl coming its way. Every house in the frame has a clear sightline to the Sound, an amenity that in the 1950s was still priced like scenery rather than real estate.
