A postcard-worthy alpine lake sits perfectly still under blue sky, ringed by forested mountains and scattered houses that appear to have arrived by the logic of leisure rather than necessity. The church steeple visible on the far shore is the kind of detail that travel photographers in the 1950s learned to hunt for—proof that civilization, and therefore comfort, awaited on the other side of the water. Someone owned a color-slide camera expensive enough to preserve this scene in saturated blues and greens, the kind of equipment that marked the holder as someone with disposable income and time enough to travel to places where mountains met water. The hazy distance and the way the far hills dissolve into atmosphere suggests late afternoon or the particular heat-shimmer of summer in the season when middle-class Europeans began driving to such places in growing numbers. This is the view that sold a thousand vacation packages, the moment before anyone had to think about parking or reservations.
