A vast emptiness of sandy soil and sparse grass spreads across the foreground like a parking lot waiting for its purpose to be decided, while across the water a prosperous residential suburb climbs the far shore in the disciplined rows of mid-century American success. The sandy field itself—neither park nor meadow nor clearly anything in use—suggests the awkward moment when a Midwestern lakefront town had acquired land for some civic purpose but hadn't yet determined what. In the distance, the kind of solid brick and wood houses that housed the postwar middle class cluster around a church steeple that still mattered enough to orient the town around it. The whole scene is a portrait of a place confident it would grow, with room to spare and clear water to back it up, all waiting for the next decision to be made.
