Someone decided that the family's new Chevrolet deserved a portrait, and that the children should be in it. The Illinois plate dates the car to 1951, and the boy has been placed on the fender in the manner of a hood ornament, dressed in his good coat and flat cap as though the occasion required it. His older sister stands beside the bumper with the expression of a child who has been told to hold still, wearing her church scarf and glasses, doing exactly that. In 1951 a new Chevrolet was a significant acquisition — the kind of thing a family drove to the park on a Sunday specifically so someone could photograph it. The car outlasted any notion that it was the point of the picture.
