Three children have dropped onto a frozen pond to lace up their skates, sitting in a tangle of blades the way kids do when no adult has told them to use a bench. Behind them, across a margin of dead winter grass, two early-1950s sedans are parked at the road's edge — the standard delivery system for a Saturday afternoon in an era when a frozen pond was a complete recreational plan requiring no admission, no staff, and no waiver. Nobody tested the ice with anything more scientific than the confidence of whoever got there first. The boy in the middle looks entirely unbothered by this, which was the whole point of being twelve in 1953.
