A woman in a dark coat and blue headscarf stands on a frozen river with two children, a boy in a burgundy coat and a younger child in brown, while another figure in black stands to the right. The ice is smooth and bare, the treeline low and distant, the sky overcast and blank. This was ordinary winter life: you took the children out onto the frozen river because it was there and it was winter, and the ice held. The woman's headscarf and formal coat suggest she is dressed for this as a proper outing, not an incidental walk. No one is sledding or skating or doing anything that required the ice to exist; they are simply standing on it in their good clothes, the way people once did when the season demanded it and there was nowhere else to go.
