A boy of about five and a girl of about ten stand in a frost-bleached field with bare trees at the treeline behind them, dressed for cold weather in the manner that meant children should be visible from a distance: the boy in denim and a dark jacket, the girl in a dark coat and a blue headscarf tied under her chin, glasses on her young face. They are posed for the camera as children were posed then—still, aware they were being documented, their clothes chosen not for comfort but for the photograph itself. The girl's grip on the boy's hand suggests she has been told to keep him there. This is the American heartland in winter, the kind of ordinary Sunday outing a parent would drive children to and then photograph to prove it happened, a landscape and a moment no one would ever return to or need to, except now.
