The Louisiana license plate reads 1955, which narrows things down considerably, and the car — a mid-1950s Dodge in two-tone blue with its chrome bumper gleaming against red dirt — is clearly the real subject of this portrait, even if it can't hold a child on its own. Posing with the new car was a 1950s ritual performed with the seriousness of a real estate closing: you had saved, you had bought, and the evidence needed to be on record. The woman in the royal-blue dress has her daughter perched on the rear fender with the quiet confidence of someone who has thought about this composition.

Rural Louisiana in summer, sandy soil underfoot and hardwoods pressing in from every side, a farm structure just visible through the tree line. The little girl in pink sits obediently on the chrome bumper guard wearing the expression of a child who has been told this matters, and has decided to believe it.

Decades later the car is worth more than anyone paid for it, and the dress looks perfectly proportioned, and the only thing that has not aged well is the assumption that the good roads ahead were infinite. The plate number places this to 1955 with the kind of specificity that is more honest than a guess.
