She has chosen the classic tourist stance of the decade: one hand on the hip, chin lifted, sunglasses on even though the sky is the flat white of a hazy Riviera morning. Behind her the curve of the bay and the pale hotel facades identify the spot as Nice, where the Promenade des Anglais had spent a century training visitors to stroll rather than merely walk, and to be photographed doing it.
The skirt is full-length wool for what looks like a warm day, because in 1950s Europe modesty still outranked comfort on a public seafront. Somewhere behind her other people are doing the same loop along the same railing, each one convinced their own version of the pose is the interesting one.
A plain concrete post with a rubbish bin anchors the foreground, the least glamorous object in the frame and the only one that has not moved an inch since the picture was taken.
