She's in a blue swimsuit with the easy, slightly squinting smile of someone on vacation who has decided the vacation is going well. Behind her, a big white clapboard house — the kind of tall, boxy coastal rental that exists purely to sleep twelve people who will argue about who got the smaller bedroom — stands in a flat, treeless lot that suggests somewhere along the Atlantic seaboard, where the land runs out before the ambition does.
The clothesline strung along the fence in the background is doing real work: a full day's worth of laundry airing in the open, because in the 1950s you did not go on vacation from laundry. The neighboring structures repeat the same white-painted, gable-roofed template in every direction, the whole neighborhood being essentially the same house negotiated slightly differently with the contractor.
Somebody handed her a camera and stepped back, and she posed the way people posed when they wanted to prove they had been somewhere and were having a good time, which is all a vacation snapshot has ever needed to accomplish.
