On the image

Someone said stand by the water, and these three obeyed with the seriousness of a passport photo. The men kept their good suits on for a walk along the rocks, hats removed and carried rather than worn, because a gentleman uncovered his head for the camera even when there was no one around to see the gesture but a lake full of nobody. The woman's cardigan and floral skirt suggest she dressed for a garden party that happened to relocate to a beach.

This was vacation in an era when vacation did not mean casual. A trip to the shore was still an occasion, and an occasion required a belt, a bow tie, and shoes unsuited to sand, all worn without apparent irony by people who had never heard the word 'resort wear.' The rubble and driftwood underfoot did not register as a wardrobe problem to anyone standing in it.

They link arms and face the lens with the flat confidence of people who assume this picture will end up in an album captioned simply 'the lake trip.' It will, and sixty years on nobody will remember which lake, only that a man once wore a full suit to stand on a rock.
