Somebody decided that a walk under blossoming trees required a blazer with a heraldic crest sewn to the pocket, as though the boy might at any moment be asked to defend the honor of a prep school he was too young to attend. He obliges with the kind of grin that only exists because a parent said smile, holding his sister's hand less out of affection than because he was told to.

The girl has been fitted out in the full costume of 1950s female childhood: a white cotton dress, a straw hat anchored just so, and a small quilted purse she carries with no possible contents worth carrying. Her patent shoes and ankle socks complete an outfit built for exactly one purpose, which was to be photographed once and outgrown by summer.

Behind them, the trees are doing all the work no one asked them to do, and a pastel sedan waits at the curb the way family cars did before anyone thought to leave them out of the frame. The whole scene is a small monument to an era that dressed its children like miniature adults attending an occasion, whether or not one existed.
