Shannon Airport in the 1950s occupied a peculiar position in the history of aviation: it was the last fuel stop between Europe and America, which meant that every transatlantic passenger who ever crossed the Atlantic by air had technically been to County Clare whether they wanted to or not. The propeller airliners clustered on the apron below — silhouettes consistent with Constellations or DC-6s — represent the brief, confident era when piston-engined flight was the pinnacle of modern travel and nobody had yet told the airlines that jets were coming to make all of this irrelevant.
The terminal building, a blocky white structure scaled to a world where a busy day might involve a dozen departures, sits beside its red communications tower with the unassuming authority of a facility that handled heads of state and considered itself adequate to the task. The patchwork of small fields beyond the perimeter fence — Irish agricultural land subdivided by centuries of inheritance law — stops at the runway edge as though the two eras agreed on a boundary.
Within a decade the jets arrived, Shannon lost its stranglehold on the Atlantic crossing, and terminals ten times that size were being built everywhere. The people who designed this one assumed they were building for the future, which they were — just not the one they had in mind.
