Someone built a full-size trolley car out of flowers and pinned a year onto its flank, 1954, as if the float itself needed a birth certificate. The builders behind Pasadena's Tournament of Roses took the job with the gravity of engineers, every seed, petal, and pod glued in place to survive a five-mile parade route and a panel of judges who apparently graded floral trolleys the way others graded suspension bridges.

A girl in white perches at the running board with the practiced calm of someone who has rehearsed her wave for weeks, while a boy leans out the trolley's open side reaching for applause that hasn't arrived yet. The crowd along the curb stands the way parade crowds always stand, patient and slightly too warm, having gotten up before dawn to see a bus made of chrysanthemums roll past once.

By the following morning the whole vehicle would be compost, which nobody in 1954 considered strange, since the point of the thing was never to last. It was to be perfect for exactly one parade, and then to prove that Southern California could grow flowers faster than the rest of the country could grow envy.
